Meet the lovely miss Liora Bels, author of The MIX, a loving blend of plant-based recipes and get inspired to live a healthy lifestyle with her easy on-the-go, yet totally delicious, recipes!
How would you describe your philosophy about living a healthy lifestyle?
I believe in a holistic, balanced approach to life. By creating daily rituals of eating nourishing foods, adding more plants to your diet, sleeping well, incorporating time management, and working out in a way that’s right for you, you can create a sustainable positive effect on your life today and in the future. The benefits of a healthy routine are truly limitless.
Why and when did you start eating this way?
Well, it has been a process really and it still is. It certainly did not happen overnight but is a part of life, of changing and growing.
Traveling the world, spending a long time in LA, surrounding myself with people and a lifestyle that feels true and authentic to me definitely inspired me in many ways. I don’t believe in food labels. Taking the time to listen to my body instead of just following trends that suggest that there is only one right way to eat or live, helped me find a way of eating that feels good for me.
How did the idea for The Mix develop?
When it comes to cooking or eating a more healthy plant-based diet, I often hear the words: no time, no ideas, no talent, I don’t know how to cook, I lack inspiration. Being a working mom, I know it can be a challenge to find the time to cook an abundant healthy meal. Yet I want to make feeding my children nourishing and thoughtfully prepared food a priority. You don’t have to be a chef to cook a delicious, wholesome meal to take care of yourself with quality organic products. So I came up with recipes that are easy and quick to make – without having to sacrifice nutrients, taste, and aesthetics.
What can we expect from your cookbook?
I love food and want to create a delicious, beautiful, vibrant, and healthy cuisine. The Mix offers flavourful, nutritious, and simple everyday plant-based recipes, incorporating only high-quality and minimally-processed products that I believe help optimize our health, energy, and radiance. The recipes are all mainly made in a high-speed-blender or food processor, or even just with your hands – quick and easy. Perfect for everyday life. My mission is to inspire people to make the right food choices every day and to celebrate natural food. I hope the combination of taste, aesthetics and information about the benefits is the key to finding love for natural food and to taking care of oneself. This book is made for everyone!
Can you describe a typical ‘what you eat in day’? Are you a breakfast-addict just like me? 🙂
I love food so I enjoy every meal of the day!
In the mornings I love to start my day with overnight oats, warm porridges that I cook with fresh homemade almond milk. I like to add cold-pressed coconut and hemp oil for a good intake of Omega-3-fatty acids.
The flavor and toppings can change from season to season and depending on what I feel like:
I add apples or berries, soaked seeds and different spices, such as cinnamon, turmeric or vanilla. Delicious toppings, for example hemp seeds or shredded coconut make it perfect.
Seasonal salads with lots of avocado or bowls with quinoa or lentils and steamed veggies, served with a creamy tahini dressing. I always sprinkle fresh herbs on top.
I enjoy a smoothie with lots of greens or a cold pressed juice. I also love to nibble on soaked nuts. In the colder months I enjoy my golden nut milk, which is warming and soothing. You can find the recipe in my book THE MIX!
Roasted root vegetables are my fave at the moment, served with cashew sour cream or beetroot-horseradish – which is one of my favorite recipes in my book THE MIX called „Back To The Roots“. I also very much enjoy stews and soups as it’s getting colder outside.
Not so secret but definitely worth mentioning: I like to add cold pressed coconut oil to lots of different dishes and drinks.
What will we always find in your fridge?
Lemons, lots of veggies and fresh homemade almond milk.
Your point of view on superfoods? My favorite one is raw cacao!
I love superfoods and add them to my dishes daily. But you have to know that despite all their incredible benefits and healthful properties, superfoods won’t work miracles if you don’t place importance on an overall wholesome and balanced diet.
My favorite superfood is coconut oil and of course I feel you when it comes to raw cacao… Can’t resist, won’t resist!
To me, life is all about balance. I love me some guilty pleasures. How about you? What’s your favorite guilty pleasure?
I agree you should enjoy what feels good to you. I tend not to combine the words guilty & pleasure though. To me pleasure is detached from guilt and filled with joy and celebration.
So I have to admit that I love the scent and taste of a hot, fresh almond milk latte once in while – I know coffee is not good for you. But hey, if I fancy it, I will enjoy it without guilt and with lots of pleasure!
I love the workout at sxills athletes training club here in Berlin. It’s super smart high performance training that boosts your metabolism, makes you stronger and energized and brings you to a next training level in a short time. I enjoy it very much and have been feeling amazing since training that way. I’m happy I found a workout that suits me best.
Can you give us some tips for the upcoming European winter as a Health Food Specialist?
Ofcourse! Here are some of my favorite powerhouses that I love incorporating into my daily meals – especially when it gets colder outside. They are great at boosting your immune system and metabolism.
Has numerous health benefits. It is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. As it contains profound antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic properties the spice is often used in medicine and beauty-care.
Good to know: Black pepper enhances the absorption of turmeric.
COCONUT OIL, ORGANIC VIRGIN OR EXTRA-VIRGIN
is a versatile and genuine natural powerhouse with incredible health benefits. It has strong antiviral, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties and is believed to support the immune system.
Lemons are full of antioxidants and provide the body with beneficial electrolytes like potassium, magnesium and calcium. Start your day with warm lemon water – a nourishing, immune boosting treat for cold mornings in winter!
Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids can have a great positive impact on your body. A sufficient supply of omega-3 helps sustain elastic and resistant skin, promotes overall anti-inflammatory effects and even supports the immune system.
FOODS RICH IN CHLOROPHYLL
Dark greens such as kale, spinach, wild herbs or micro algae, chlorella and spirulina for example, contain a great amount of precious chlorophyll. Chlorophyll has an antioxidant and detoxifying effect, and is rich in important minerals, vitamins and amino acids that sustain our whole organism.
Which countries would you love to travel to for food-inspiration and which countries have already inspired you in the past?
I enjoyed the most amazing food in Tel Aviv, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Bali, Sydney and Marrakesh.
I love traveling and I love food, so any country will be a great inspiration I believe.

Writing my own cookbook is a truly wonderful and very exciting achievement, also especially considering that I wrote it throughout my entire pregnancy. It went to print one day before I gave birth to my second child! This book holds so much love of mine inside, I can barely describe it.
I have very exciting projects coming up that I will reveal shortly.
Other than that it was always a dream of mine to run a small and precious hotel with only a few rooms. The rooms would be filled with beautiful mementos from my travels, the kitchen would be filled with aromas of delicious, healthy and fresh food, the garden rich in herbs, veggies and flowers.
A place that inspires, fills the heart with love and joy. Well, simply put, a home away from home.
